Rotation #7 Ashland, OR

I just finished my 6 week rotation doing General Surgery in Ashland, southern Oregon just 10-15 miles from the border to California.  Ashland is about 10-15 south of Medford, located in the Rogue Valley which you can see pictured above.  Ashland is set in a beautiful area and population is about 20,000.  I loved being in a small town again.  On one side of the freeway was rolling hills of farm country and on the other, mountains covered in pine trees.  There was a good mix of sun, snow, and rain to keep me enjoying the weather.  Ashland is known for its Shakespeare Festival and has a cute downtown area with shops and delicious restaurants lining main street.

I ended up living with the best friends of one of my friend's parents, if you follow that.  They are in their 60's and also members of the church.  They had a nice house on the edge of town with the basement all to myself.  They would cook dinner and I would do the dishes.  I was really a nice setup, not to mention we got along fabulously.

Apart from San Diego, Ashland has been my favorite place to be thus far.  I went on quite a few hikes while I was in the area too.

As for my rotation, I worked with a fabulous surgeon.  Surgeons in general have a bad rap as being jerks, but I learned wonderful things from my preceptor.  He had great relationships with his patients and really had no concept of time (he was pretty much late for everything).  We would spend as much time as need be with each patient and he would even stay after work for upwards of an hour to teach me something.  I learned a great deal from him and definitely feel I will be a better clinician because of him.

Going in to school, surgery was my second interest after emergency medicine.  I sound realized, however, that I don't think I'm cut out for it.  To begin with, I didn't realize how many clinic hours it was.  I only did 5 surgeries in the first 3 weeks I was there (I definitely made up for it in the next 3 weeks though).  I dislike being on my feet all day every day.  And can I say swollen ankles?  Who knew standing would make your feet swell so much?  Also, surgery days were brutal.  You have to squeeze in bathroom breaks and a snack here and there.  It's one surgery right after another.  5 in one day?  Forget food altogether!

Unfortunately I had to bow out on a few surgeries due to getting light-headed.  They say it happens to every one, but those lights get so darn hot!  I also blame my mask - hard to get used to breathing through that sucker for 2 hours straight.  Fortunately that only happened a few times, but too many for my liking!  Embarrassing to say the least, although the whole surgical team was really great about it and told me not to worry.  Funny because it wasn't the blood that got to me, like some people.  It was those dang lights!

I got to do and see a ton!  I first assisted in all the surgeries I did with my preceptor which includes things like making the initial incision, retracting the incision, holding structures out of the way, assisting his suturing, suctioning, and suturing/stapling the wound back up.  I loved it!  If it weren't for the brutal schedule, I could do surgery all day every day.  Some of the surgeries I was in on included hernia repair, gallbladder removal, colectomy, anal fistula, rectopexy, appendectomy, toxic megacolon, intussusception, c-section, skin graft, rotator cuff repair, knee scope, and a few others.  Good stuff!  We ended up working in 3 different locations: the clinic, surgery center, and local hospital.  I had a great time with surgery, but I can honestly say I'm glad it's over.  That schedule is too brutal for me.

Mississippi Pizza

Photobucket
I had THE PERFECT PORTLAND EXPERIENCE last week. My team going to Nicaragua have started the daunting task of fundraising and so our first event was at Mississippi Pizza. The Occupational Therapy students were in charge of this one. You could come listen to live music, eat some delicious pizza and part of your bill would go to our fund. First of all, Mississippi Ave. is major hippy/Portlandy AND is on the East side, which also equates to hippy. I LOVE the area though and want to come back and explore. It's a cute little street to stroll down and look in shops with lots of good food choices. So the first person I meet is in charge of it all and has dreds. The next person I meet is wearing a tank top and has underarms full of hair. Really? People still actually do that? The venue was quaint. The music was fantastic. The pizza was delish. The crowd was entertaining. What more could you ask for? You may just have to come see for yourself.....

Portland Day 3 - Light Rain with Occasional Outbursts of Sun

Today was a shopping and exploration day. We were like Lewis and Clark themselves! Ok, not really but I always love exploring and finding my way around a new city. It reminds me of being in Europe. Oh Europe! But, that's another post for a later day.......

So apparently I live super close to everything good. Washington Square Mall is about 10 minutes. We're talking H&M, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Apple, among others. One of the best malls I've ever seen. Costco is also about 10 minutes. Here I am testing out a desk..... haha!

Church is about 10 minutes away. The temple is 10 minutes about as well. My sister and I just happened upon it while driving. And yes, that is me jumping at the bottom of the photo :)

Downtown is only 15 minutes. I love my location, not to mention it's a super nice area and neighborhood.

Elise and I explored Lewis & Clark College a bit since that's where our parents went to school and met. It's a beautiful area, set in the woods.

The river front would also be a fun place to hang out at night. You can stroll along the river and stop at an occasional shop or two and try a delectable vegan pastry :)

I stocked up on furniture at Ikea. Couldn't resist taking a picture, but here's your first clue to how environmental-friendly Portland is.....

Oh, there will definitely be more to follow on this subject! Environmental-friendly that is :)

For FHE, I also got in my first hike, of the many to come, at the Tualitan Wildlife Refuge.

I love this city already!

If you were a bumper sticker, what would you say?

I LOVE these bumper stickers! Yes, I actually bought them with a purpose in mind, but NOT to put on my car. You shall see my ingenious use of them shortly.....

Nelson, BC, Canada.....a must read

My family and I just took a quick trip to Nelson to visit relatives. Man, I don't even know where or how to start describing this place to you. I've come here quite a bit over the years growing up to see family. Let me just preface this post about Nelson by saying....I love it!! It's so different from anything you or I am used to and it seems, quite frankly, to be stuck back in the 70s.

The naturaleza (I can never think of this word in English!! It equates to the following - setting, scenery, landscape, geography.....something like that anyway) of Nelson is amazing. It is nestled in the valley of these ginormous thickly-forest-populated mountains along this ginormous lake formed by glacier water, with lots of beaches. The town itself is very quaint and cute with a main street loaded with shops and little houses outlying the area. This might help you envision it (although you can't see the town because of the trees):

So now that you can envision it physically, it's time to understand the atmosphere and culture. I could do that in one word: GRANOLA

If you don't know what that means, just take a look at the pictures below. I'll let you deduce your own opinions of Nelson based on what you see..... I could just describe it with words, but it's better to see it.

This one explains itself....

Lots of loose flowy clothing (not matching I might add)...

These guys are very abundant...The Kootenay Co-op is a health food store with lots of natural/organic products...Lots of dred locks. This guy's is exceptionally long...Bumper stickers....oh yeah! That's what it's all about!Notice the hat...

So, what did you come up with?? Your opinions...?

Here's the real kicker.....!!! Inside the Kootenay Co-op (the health food store) this sign was present, with a box full of flip flops of course.
